The blue phone, not so yummy and other musings...

No post for Sunday...  I sat here and stared at the screen and simply could not find anything positive to say.  Circumstances from earlier in the day had made me ill and the kids (one in particular) had driven me up the proverbial wall.  So far, the kids are heading down the same trail this evening....

Yesterday we laid Aunt Marjorie to rest.  Although I don't really remember that much about her or Uncle Raymond, they were always nice to us and there was always this sense of mystery about them.  At the funeral the pastor recalled Marjorie from years past and shared little tidbits as is typical in at most funerals.  The most touching/memorable thing was that she was being buried on the day of what would have been her and Raymond's 64th wedding anniversary.  I saw a lot of people brush away a tear after that.

After the funeral, family and friends gathered at Raymond and Marjorie's house.  While talking with family, I just happened to look down and saw this Sea Foam blue-green rotary-dial phone.  It was still plugged into the wall and had been used on a regular basis.  It was beside Marjorie's chair.  Mom explained that it had even worked during the power outages after the April 27th storms.  OF COURSE IT DID!!!!  It gets everything it needs to operate from the phone company and they have the means to power the phone system for at least a month without power from local utilities.  The funniest thing was the boys... they just stared at it.  They had never seen one and had no idea how it even worked.  Priceless!

Apparently the high-rollers and money people of Decatur were too much for my wife because after an hour of being there she was chomping at the bit to leave.  A little embarrassing... but.... FINE.  After a short delay because of being blocked in, we departed.  Homeward bound...  Yay...

Once home, my wife inquired if anyone was hungry.  The boys were, I was not.  I had eaten some after the funeral and was comfortable.  On the menu was a recipe from the South Beach cookbook.  Don't get me wrong, some of the recipes are good.  This one... well, it... uhm... really wasn't.  It was edible though.  Ham and Peas with whole wheat pasta and some kind of almost nonexistent sauce based on half and half.  I managed to eat one plate of it but no more.  I had to sneak a dill pickle later to kill the taste.

I love my boys.  Sometimes the can really grate on my nerves.  They were playing an action game on the XBOX.  No problem.  Alan feels like the game requires his sick and twisted attempt at comedy as a running commentary to the game.  "Shut up" has no meaning once he gets in this mode.  Actually, nothing has any meaning except for his mindless antics.  I had to restrain myself  to keep from digging my eardrums out with a screwdriver.  As I sit and type this now, he as at it again...<sigh> but, I love him.  Now if I could just get the boys to clean their rooms.

Tonight is the Eva Amateur Radio Club meeting.  Time to make final plans for Amateur Radio Field Day.... and for me to figure out how to be there and at my 20 year class reunion.  They would have to be the same day.  I think I have something figured out but those things usually go any way except the way planned.  We shall see.

I wonder if any of this even makes sense to anyone?  I still have to refine my writing style a little... but not tonight.  It's time to head out to the meeting.

Later
